During my Artist in Residency at Lichtenvoorde in 2022, I delved into how the language of our bodies communicates our inner world.

While reading, I came across a piece by Susan Sontag, who in 1967 confided to her diary about the problems of inhabiting the body. The inner world, she thought, was far more fluid and changeable than the body in which it’s housed. In addition to Susan Sontag I came across the works of Maria Lassnig with her body-awareness work; in which she thematized sensations of her body and in this way defined her relationship to the world.

This inspired me to do a series of “carriers of meaning” in which I used my own body to reflect inner feelings and drew them.

My inner world seeps through my skin,

with my body I disclose.
